Howdy, gang:
I've been reviewing the recent plethora of lifter-related messages and have a few questions. Firstly, what is a 'bentley' and what might be a good source? The reason:
I've a 93 900S with 76k that sounds as though it's collapsed a lifter at or near the #4 cylinder. The dealer said this isn't a common occurrence, but was happy to tell me they'd find and change the single lifter for just under $800. Ummm, no thanks. From the posts, either a collapsed lifter, or an unoiled one, doesn't seem as uncommon as the dealer seems to indicate. But it seems that the bentley has a process for clearing lifter oil holes which may be clogged or vapor-locked, so I need one. Pulled the VC last weekend, but couldn't tell in the time I had which lifter was the noisy one.
Second point is that the oil in this car, which I've owned since 5,000 miles has NEVER come clean - ever - regardless of oil changes. I use fram filters and Castrol 20-50. Any ideas on a detergent, or perhaps the legendary 'bit o' tranny fluid in the oil' trick to clean out the engine? It's just plain ugly in there.
Sealers: I've used genuine hylomar on my Land Rovers for years. It comes off easily. I used it when replacing my Saab VC last weekend with clean results.
Thanks also for the information last time regarding the heater bypass valve. The dealer was happy to help me with diagrams and recommendations regarding going back to the old hose design. Then they sold me a new bypass valve for $40. Thanks for the info. And thanks in advance for your thoughts on my present issue.
Kind regards,
Lyndon
