A number of decades ago, I deliberately rented a car [when mine was in the shop] with manual. Without benefit of a coach, I sorta learned [with plenty of stalling, too]. Number of years went by. Bought first [new] Saab. Drove an automatic for test driving. Bought a manual, drove off lot, taking back roads. Did OK. Learned quickly, though one time I wondered why car moved slowly off line. Discovered started in third.
Make your practice runs [especially from stop, more especially on inclines] on a deserted dirt road. That way, the dirt has some forgivenss that pavement don't and put less stress on drivechain if you do something abrupt.
Manuals have other advantages besides statistically lower maintenance and repair costs. It allows push starts and it can allow you to work around all sorts of driveability problems that an automatic would have trouble with. It gives a degree of control that an automatic [besides one of the latest all-singing, all-dancing computerized versions] cannot, especially on adverse road conditions. But that may also be my contrary nature in not giving into machines totally. Then again, that's what Saab is suppose to be about [?].
