I posted here a few days about replacing the rear axle because I thought it was bent. Thanks for all the feedback guys.

Just to restate the problem, my rear tires are lasting about 10k miles tops. The car has had many previous owners. The tires look brand new on the outer halves, but the inner parts of the tread are worn bare.

I just got under the car and put a long level (should be a good straight-edge) on the top, bottom, front, and back of the axle. It didn't appear to be bent up or down (as if the owner jacked the car up on it).

Then I put the straight-edge on the front side of the axle, and it definitely is not straight. I can almost see the bend with my naked eyes (or maybe I'm imagining things). The straight-edge in the middle is hovering about 2mm off the axle. I tried to measure the back edge but it was too full of crud.

So its as if a tow truck driver threw a chain on there and yanked the car backwards a little too fast. Would this be enough to bend the axle? And would this cause the inner portions of the tread to wear so quickly?

Also, if I go over a bump and one side of the rear of the car gets a little airborn, the back of the car will shimmy/steer in that direction. It is so noticeable that I gave a friend a ride in the car and he noticed it when I asked him about it. The back of the car gets squirrely in the rain too.

Could this tire wear and rear instability going over bumps be due to back shocks, or could this 2mm that the axle is bent back in the middle be causing all these problems?
