Seventeen years is not really all that old, I have Ramblers that are 35 to nearly 40 years old which still run great. You can keep your Saab 900 running a very long time if you maintain it well, nip rust in the bud, and keep the car out of bad accidents. Usually the worst decision about keeping the car facing the long-term owner of a 900 is when (notice I didn't say "if!") the transmission goes bad, as it costs quite a few $$$ to rebuild or replace, in many cases well in excess of the car's value. There are a lot of otherwise nice, clean Saab 900s rotting in junkyards because their transmissions went bad!

In fact, I had a 1985 900 purchased new that I kept for 15 years, but finally got rid of when it needed it's second transmission rebuild at about 320,000 miles. The original transmission got the car to about 100,000 miles, the ParrFormance replacement lasted much longer. I felt bad after owning the car all that time and driving it for so many miles, but its overall condition at that point just didn't warrant the approx $2000 cost of replacing the transmission again. (I purchased a nice complete replacement 900 instead for about 1/2 that cost.)

The engine was still running great on that '85 and burning no oil even with that much mileage. It's really a shame that the trannies on these cars are not nearly as durable as the engines!
