Avoid downshifting. Period. Brakes are cheaper to replace then a trans. if you need to downshift to slow down, you're either going to fast or your brakes need to be replaced.
Change the gearbox oil. If you're using differential lube or 10w30 continue to use it. If you're using MTL, replace it with MTL.
The motor mount might be your saving grace, but from now on, let the riceburner win. Most C900's have long outlived their "racing days". I actually have to admit that I did the same thing this morning. I was defending my Saabness against a VW Golf GTI, and lost 2 balancing weights from my front wheels at 105mph. A small price to pay, given my stupidity. I'd much rather your opposing Sentra or my opposing VW win and die an early death, than sacrifice my old, finicky, yet reliable Saab.
Anyway, I hope true love doesn't die just because your trans is giving you fits. After all, it's only money ;-)
