I mulled the very same scenario you're dealing with - to repair myself or buy rebuilt. If I could have done the repair myself I would have, but I didn't have the special tools required, nor did I know where (and if) I could get the seal kit. If done myself I know the repair would have been successful and done to my high standards. But, the leak was so bad and I ran out of time to look further into the DIY scenario. I ended up pulling a good (leak free, clean, could have been a recent replacement) used one from a scrap yard donor car that already had the engine pulled to make my job that much easier. The install on my car was a success, the rack works, and it doesn't leak. As far as maintenance goes, and because the chief cause for a leak to begin is seal rot, I'm going to drain, flush and replace the PS fluid once a year. Same as the brake/clutch fluid and coolant.
I'd like to read on here that it is possible to do the seal replacement job, but for most car owners the easiest option is to buy rebuilt.
