Ok, I have been dealing with this for a long time. the 89 base ECU died like all eventually do. I got a '90 NA ECU and put it in. I get an intermitent CE light and a *wierd* idle. It will oscillate up and down. up to 1200 then down to 800 and back. It is like it is in resonance. I tried a new AMM. Every AMM works just fine in my '92 turbo and in the '89 with the 90 ECU it has an oscillating idle. Fuel mileage is fine, it starts right up every time. I put the 89 ECU back in it and cut the purple lead to the FP relay and grounded it such that the fuel pump runs with the key on and will run afterwards for 30 seconds or something. It idles absolutely beautifully. Based on this swap, it would seem to be a bad '90 ECU (too, but different). It is actually a friend's car now and I end up dealing with this! Any ideas? Does anyone here have a '90 NA ECU in an '89? I think Roo tried this and lost his A/C compressor, but I think it is the relay. I cannot verify from here, though. Any odeas here? Does anyone have an '89 or '90 NA car that would be willing to try this ECU to see if it does the same thing? I'd cover shipping. A little board level investigation reveals a couple of differences.
