Well, some of the '89 ECUs lived for months. Others, like the one in my '89 SPG lasted for nearly 14 years.
Any electronic device has a finite lifespan. Determining the design lifespan is in the art of engineering the device. I wouldn't doubt that Bosch used something to the effect of a MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) of 60,000 hours (operating 8 hours a day for 15 years) as a design criterion. Maybe longer. Maybe shorter. Historically, the weakness in the '89 ECUs is apparently the output contacts for the fuel pump relay.
Dos and donts. Hmmm. Good question.
A shoot-from-the-hip list might include:
Avoid power system voltage spikes - Don't use your car to jump start anybody else. Don't jump start your car.
Don't reverse-polarize the battery cables. Don't turn the car on and off and on and off. Maintain the ground points. Maintain your alternator and battery.
No doubt others will add to the list of D&Ds.
