I got one of the 3 bosch part numbers with the shortest pigtail (wires. That means I had to cut the old sensor wires and make the splice probably less than a foot from the 02 sensor. Less than a year later, no problems. I was originally concerned that all the heat of the exhuast and turbo near the splice could cause problems, but I used solder to make the spice, then heat shrink tubing, then I taped it all up with electrical tape. No need to stagger anything, just make sure you do a good job making the connection and buttoning it all up. I've heard some guys use crimps, but since I solder together my own audio gear, I prefer solder. Just twist the wires together well, and then solder. The key to solder is that you need a good electrial and physical connection, the solder will act as a glue. If it's your conductor and physical connection, the vibrations in a car can shake it loose over time. Get a good twist in the wires first...
Best of luck!
