Compared to the 2.0L engine, the 2.1 was more prone to head gasket failures, and they are more likely to have cylinder bore wear. You can pull the head from a 2.0L engine at 150K miles and still see the factory hone marks on the cylinder walls. It's unlikely that the cylinder walls on the 2.1 will look as good.
It may have been a manufacturing change in the 2.1 having to do with how it was cast, or the material used.
Remember, we're comparing the 2.1 to the 2.0l engine. The 2.1 motor isn't a disaster by any means. It's just that the 2.0l engine is so damn reliable, most everything else pales in comparison.
