I wouldn't run less than 4/32" . It depends on how deep the snow gets around you...the most important factor is the rubber and tread design. Better to have soft rubber with 4/32 than new summer performance rubber that turns to hard plastic below 30F!
I just bought a pair of dunlop winter M2 tires for the Volvo because my old Pirelli Winter 210P tires delaminated or something...internal lump/vibration unable to balance out. Sure, I could have left them on the rear with last years new dunlop winter M2 tires on the front, but the Pirellis had 4-5 years on them and about 5/32"...time to change.
BTW, I dislike my Yokohama Guardex four snows on the Saab 900T...they're squirmy and irritating above 80mph. If you replace your snow tires (and I recommend 4) get an H-rated tire for sidewall stiffness unless you never drive above 70mph....
