1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
In March of 1992 I bought my brand spankin new Saab 900. I am retiring the ole girl today with 336,000 miles on her. She has served me well. She was my second Saab (the first being a '99 Turbo). In the 10+ years I drove her I dressed her up a bit with the following changes: Saab Ronal 'Shelby' wheels, crossed drilled rotors, SPG springs, SPG ground effects, fender flares, Whale tail, 20% tint with visor. Complete swap out for leather interior. Complete Clarion system (graphic eq/cd, 6 cd changer, Audiobahn speakers). Wood grain dash fascia. Full compliment of gauges (oil, volts, outside temp). Side window louvers. She went a little faster with the Jacobs ignition, K&N open filter, and 2.5 cat back exhaust. It was too loud w/o a cat. converter.
Mechanically the car performed well. The OEM clutch was replaced at 190,000. The OEM tranny went at 200,000. Both are still going strong. The usual CV joints, inner cup, steering rack, U/L bushings, joints etc were all replaced when their limits were reached. The OEM head, valves, cylinders are still crankin strong and the OEM injectors are still in place. Even the OEM a/c compressor is sound. The paint, black, is as dark and shiney as the day I bought her. No rust!
All in all she was a great car to drive on a day to day basis. With only a few headaches along the way. She still has a lot of life left in her. I'd like to make the more significant changes to her next....bigger valves, cams, header, etc. Since she wont be an every dayer, I can take my time.
Saab made a great car. I can testify to that. Unfortunatly, the emphasis is on 'made'. I dont think GM will be able to produce a similar product (please, no arguments! just my humble opinion).
In closing thanks to all of you for your timely and very useful information on how to keep my Saab going. I replaced her with a Toyota Land Cruiser and look forward to learning about 4WD motoring. Thanks again to all and Happy Saabin !!!
