The shock itself is what limits the lower travel of the suspension. If you didn't block the upper control arm, then the shock is under a lot of tension. When you pull the bottom of the shock off of the lower control arm then the spring will slam everything down... Don't have your fingers in the way.
Or do it this way...
Lift the entire front end, blocking the upper control arms the same on both sides. This will put the anti-roll bar in a relaxed position. Now the shock isn't under tension, but the lower bushings might still be stuck (corroded). You may want to remove the outer mount for the anti-roll bar to make it easier to remove the bottom shock mount.
