OK - so now we can probably rule out a starter issue or battery/alternator issue. The part that concerns me is the clunk you mentioned in your original post. I wish you had a better description for it because the sound of a train stopping brings squeaking and squealing to mind (I have 2 train tracks across the highway in front of my house, so I hear it every half hour). The reason the clunking bothers me is because it sounds like it could possibly be valve, camshaft, or head related issue. BTW- Is your engine turbo or non, and auto. or 5 spd. ? But here's some simple stuff first:
1. Fuel delivery - I know it sounds stupid, but make sure there's gas in the tank. Check the fuel pump fuse. Check to see if fuel is being delivered up to the fuel rail, if not you might have a bad fuel pump. Check the fuel filter too.
2. Lots of electrical stuff can cause this also. Fuel pump relay above the ECU could be bad. Check the ignition system. While someone is trying to start the car, unplug a spark plug wire and hold it close to a ground and see if you have spark. If not, there are several possibilities, bad distributor (re-read 1st paragraph at this point), bad coil, bad spark plug wires, bad ignition module, bad ECU (has your check eng. light ever come on?), bad ignition switch (not likely though, but it's happend to me).
These are just some things to check, and don't assume the worst just because I raised the possibility. The main thing is to check the basics first, and move on from there. If all the above seems to check out repost your problem and email me too. I'm sure that some other contributors on this forum will have some further insights as well, especially if it's a turbo which I don't have much experience with. Good luck.
