If the whine goes away when the clutch is pushed in, but is otherwise there at all speeds, it indicates the whine is related to the input shaft of the transmission, which stops when the clutch is engaged or a load effect on the side of the gears engaged which I think is more likely since it's only in 3/4/5 gears. It could be a pinion bearing too, but I don't think so since you don't hear it in 1st or second.
IIRC that particular year/trans was amenable to strong exit pulls out of corners in second gear (:>), if you don't hear a whine under that condition it's probably related to 3/4/5 gears.
In any case it doesn't matter unless you want to blow $2500 or so and replace the transmission now before 5th starts popping out or some other bad thing happens. Trouble is, with an 84 non-turbo, it's really not worth putting that kind of money into it.
Drive it as it is until it blows up and then decide.
