Watch the tach when you crank the engine. Does the needle bounce a little?
If the needle doesn't move, then the problem is probably associated with the ignition system, most specifically the ignition module, but possibly the hall effect sensor. You could have an intermittent module. If nothing else, look on the left hand side of the engine compartment (looking forward) for the ignition module, and make sure the connector is OK.
If the tach needle moves, but the engine doesn't start, it may be fuel. It could be that the fuel pump isn't running - either a bad fuel pump or fuel pump relay - or you aren't building up fuel pressure fast enough. You go to start it, and the fuel pressure is too low to start. But the next time around, you' ve got the residual fuel pressure from the first (failed) start, along with the buildup from the second start.
