Tie rod boot broken. Is this correct replacement list?>

Hey all,
I rotated my tires over the weekend and found (dern it!) that my passenger side steering rack-to-tie rod BOOT was busted. Completely, as in 2 pieces!
(Oh, well. Continuum strikes again. I guess that's what my heated seat fix got me...)
Seriously, though, I looked in my Bentley 8V book last night to try and figure out if I need to remove tie rod end from both the "steering swivel member" AND from tie rod. After reading the Bentley, though, I don't think I have to take the tie rod off the swivel member. Suggestions?
I do have two questions. Any help will be greatly appreciated...
1) Can I just loosen the tie rod end locknut and unscrew tie rod from the tie rod end using pliers, leaving tie rod end fastened to steering swivel member?
2) Is it safe to turn the tie rod with pliers/vice grips or will it ruin the tie rod-to-steering-rack seal or will tie rod come apart from the actual rack?
(Of course, I know if the above procedure is feasible, I'll still have to get the front end aligned afterward.)
Thanks,
Micah in NC
