High idle can be lots of things, from vacuum leaks, to dirty/bad AIC valve, to bad AMM. High idle is NOT caused by a bad clutch. But you're welcome to check the clutch to see if its worn out yet...
Bad clutch or pressure plate would cause shuddering vibrations as you engage the clutch. Think of warped brake rotors, how they don't provide smooth braking power...
A worn out clutch would slip if for example you floor it in gear without touching the clutch pedal.
I think an '88 turbo has LH 2.2, so you can't easily read fault codes like LH 2.4, but check townsendimports.com for idle troubleshooting tips. Look for vacuum leaks & clean your AIC valve. If you can find a good AMM to swap, try that too.
