Suffice it to say that it's not a simple answer, with experienced people expressing different opinions. You are on the right track, however. Synthetic oil base stock has an inherently high viscosity index, so it shows a higher viscosity in high temperature high shear conditions than a petroleum oil with the same apparent viscosity.
The short answer is to select a synthetic having an ACEA rating of A3, which usually takes you to a 40 weight oil. Mobil 0W40, Amsoil 10W40, RedLine 10W40 are all oils which meet that requirement. Since 2000, Saab has used 0W40 synthetic as the factory fill in all their cars - note that this has been *similar to* but not *exactly* Mobil 1 0W40, although with the launch of the new 9-3 Sports Sedan, the factory fill (to my understanding) has been switched to be Mobil 1. No doubt Mobil offered a price break in exchange for the sticker.
One caution: since 2000, Castrol Syntec has been made using a highly refined petroleum base stock, rather than a synthesized poly-something. Many people think this is dirty pool. FWIW, around 2000, Castrol was purchased by BP. Coincidence? You decide.
