After Saab changing ball joint many times, I have been lucky just whacking the eye of the spindle at balljoint shaft with a big hammer(after loosening big nut). 5-6 sharp whacks and the joint will pop right up(or down). I acually have one of those old pickle forks and have never gotten to the point of digging it out for our Saab balljoints.
As others have said, the bolts into the control arms can get nasty...agree on the PBlaster soak.
