Agree w JohnK, a three pound hammer on the piece of the knuckle the ball joint stub fits in will usually pop it right out. Same technique for the tie rod ends also.
Hint:
As a "used-to-be-yankee", I've had LOTS of experience w stuck ball joint and other suspension bolts. Up to the point of cutting the bolt head/nut off w a torch and drilling the old bolts deep enough to allow it to come out of the a-arm. Do your self a favor and get a big tube of zinc anti-sieze goop. Most auto parts store should have it although you will probably need to ask. During re-assembly, coat the bolt shafts w the stuff and spin the bolt in the hole before tightening. Use it everwhere there is metal to metal contact when working on any suspension pieces. You will never have a problem getting things apart after.
