The head gasket will, or has failed. As I never tire of saying, it's a matter of unalterable chemistry between the factory installed coolant, and the alloy of the cylinder head. This is why you can get one for so little $$. Check the the car's records, absolutely bring it to a Saab mechanic - before you buy - and he can eyeball the gasket, or do a pressure test, or a leak down test. The big picture is, you can not spend $3000 and get as good a car as the Saab. On fuel economy and storage capacity alone, the 900 has little competition. Add the level of comfort, the handling, the fact that on all-season tires you really can drive through a blizzard - the 900 has no competition. BUT, any car at age 11 will demand regular repair: Switches go bad. Hoses, belts, fuel pumps, radiators, inner-drivers, and on and on. According to Consumer's Choice, the avg. costs of repairs for a c900 are actually less than those for a lot of other cars, but you'll still have to make the repairs, and sometimes, you will feel as if you're just pouring $$ into it. (The first thing I would pour $$ into is the cooling system.) But, you won't be making monthly payments to the bank, insurance will be low, and you paid almost nothing to get the car in the 1st place, so it's probably still a good deal. Just be prepared to be involved w/ the car. Good luck!
