Step one to owning a Saab - either be mechanically inclined, or have the bucks to keep it running. I run an '85 and have had very few problems with the car...but the things I have had to do have cost me very little since I do the work myself (fuel pump, clutch, fuel injection tweaking, O2 sensor). It would have cost me many thousands to have had a mechanic do the work.
Head gaskets - yup. They go. Most consider this just one of the things you have to replace after awhile on just about any turbo car. If you have a modicum of mechanical knowledge, this isn't a difficult job to do.
I don't know of any particular electrical gremlins on the early 90's cars...they are the norm with my 85 since it had the biodegradeable wiring harness (those Swedes are so "green"!).
Still, I didn't blink when I took my car on a recent 1400 mile round trip. It blazed along the highway at 75 mph happy as can be. They're great cars...sometimes persnickety, but to be fair, I tend to like that in a car (I also have a Jensen Healey, Mazda RX-7, Saab Sonett, and am working at purchasing an Alfa Romeo, so yes, I have the persnickety car act DOWN).
I think you could go much worse for lots more money than an early 90's Saab, which is why I drive an 85 to work every day. Ya can't get as much car as this for the $1500 I paid for mine a couple years ago.
One other good thing to consider - if you're just learning to wrench on a car, a Saab is a good starter since the car is pretty simple, the parts are still available, there are great manuals out there (Bentley), and you have the support of this GREAT discussion group when you get stuck. Try that on an early 90's Toyota...
