Ahh yes... the old sound deadening. Best thing you can do, in my experience, is go rip apart a later car - I think maybe as early as '86 but possibly as late as '88. Starting at some point in those years, Saab moved to some other formulation of the rubber/foam, and it's far more durable. I think the final update was in 1990, and the stuff got really thick. At any rate, it's easy enough to pull this stuff out of a later car and install it in yours. When I installed the 16v in my '80 900T, I also installed all the sound deadening mats from the donor '88 SPG. Made a world of difference in interior noise...
If you're looking to spend money, I'd look to Dynamat or a similar product. Probably cost you $80 or so to do the entire floor, but it should do wonders in terms of keeping heat and noise out of the cabin.
