My recently on the road 85 900T 16v (136k) suddenly started giving me problems, and I need some help tracking it down. The car sat for a year until I "rescued" it last Spring and, after changing fluids, have put 500+ miles on it this Fall. When cold it was hard to keep running previous to this, but I figured some AIC etc work would cure that. A leaky valve cover
gasket was fixed first, but somehow I suspect I may have bumped the fuel
return line (from FPR to rail, the little short one) and it started
leaking right after that, around the crimps etc. Tightening did not help,
so I bought a new line and washers and its dry again. But FIRST I had a
new line made locally, with original ends, but it was not molded so had
quite a kink in it. When I drove it like that, I had a nasty fuel smell
from the rear (I think, but it was bad in the interior) so I quit driving
it after a few days and ordered the OEM line. Now with the OEM line the
car starts VERY hard, lots of cranking and FINALLY takes off, like its
either not getting fuel or flooded. The new line stays dry, but there is
a slight fuel smell from the rear (I pulled the trunk apart and it
appears dry around the pump area) and the hard starting (even when warmed
up but let sit, like during lunch) makes me think it is NOT going to
start some day. Its like the car is losing fuel pressure until the pump
brings it up, but the OEM line with the proper drain back feature should
alleviate that. I think.

My question is... could I have ruined the fuel pump (a Bentley idea) when
I used the "kinked" hose, or do I have some other problem? I am at a loss
here as to "where to start" on this mess. When warm the car runs great,
no problem whatsoever. Any ideas would be appreciated!!!! I have not
changed the fuel filter yet btw. My current guess is FPR, and I have a spare that I presume to be good, so I will try that. Other ideas?

Thanks

jim
