I know nothing of the '85's, but in my experience hard starting at fuel pressure leaks are good friends. I think you're onto something with the kinked line putting stress on the fuel system. I initially thougth fpr too and would suggest trying it first since it's easy and you have the spare. The other possibility (and this is where my lack of knowledge of the earlier pumps comes in) is that you may have killed a fuel pump check valve. On my '90, the fuel lines connect to a rigid elbow fitting that connects to the top of the pump. These fittings have check valves which keep the fuel from draining back to the tank. I only wonder this because of the smell you mention. Probably the fpr, but if changing that doesn't do it, look into the check valves. Also, if you find the fpr did burst, be sure to change the oil since the car would be running way rich and possibly contaminating the oil.
