when car dies very suddenly, usually spark, not fuel. that you can smell gas/hear pump supports this, so leave the pump as-is.
does the tach needle jump when you crank it? the tach gets its signal via the ignition control module, which gets _its_ signal from the Hall Sensor. if no needle jump, then it could be your ignition control module (near APC brainbox in driver's side fender) is dead or the Hall sensor in the dist. isn't getting the signal to the ECU box or is dead.
check the Hall sensor plug on the distributor - squarish black plastic bit. be gentle. if you can have someone turn the key while you wiggle it, that could pinpoint the problem.
also, i wonder if after cranking it alot you've now got soaked plugs but the car would now otherwise start after a cooldown? from what i've read, the ignition module can act up intermittently due to heat; Hall sensor, too.
