I assume it is a 3 speed automatic. The best way I have found (in cars with up to 100K) is to pull the plug, drain out as much as comes out, and replace the same amount. Then drive a while, and repeat the operation.
Then repeat again.
If the fluid looked nasty to start with, use non-synthetic. If the fluid looked good, use synthetic.
If you did use non-synthetic, start all over using synthetic.
The filter only need being changed if there seems to be a problem. The screen is all the filtering there is. Taking the pan off can sometimes cause more problems (trying to get it resealed) than it is worth.
By all means, check the level of the final drive, too.
