Heater Control Valve questions

I just replaced my HCV. I did the work myself since the local SAAB dealer is fairly incompetent and way over-priced. My car is an '88 SAAB 900S. I love this car. It really rocks. It could use a lot of work, but I'm tackling things a little bit at a time.
Anyway, after replacing the HCV, I have a few questions. First, I'm not exactly sure where the black cover goes to protect the Cruise Control chain. Does it mount to the upper left side of the valve? I wasn't very observant when taking everything apart.
Second, the spongy packing between the valve and the firewall was so old and crumbly that isn't wasn't re-useable. Is this packing necessary?
Third, I had a pool of anti-freeze on the floor and on the cardboard foamy piece under the dash. This was from the leak. Will this dry out, or should I wash it or something.
Any help is appreciated. I used the FAQ and the Townsend link to help with the replacement. If you are thinking of doing an HCV replacement, you should DEFINATELY have a long driver with a universal joint in it. It makes it ALOT easier!
