Tranny/Clutch question...

Hi All,
This is for our 1988 900TCV,80,000 miles,5spd. We've been having trouble recently shifting into first gear from a dead stop. If the car rolls foward slightly, engaging into first becomes possible. Once in gear, you can put it in and out of 1st gear no problem. Once the clutch has been released and repressed, the problem reappears. All other gears work, but are tight.
I currently have the clutch sytem out, it looked pretty dry (splines on drive shaft) and the clutch disk is pretty worn. The pilot bearing also spins without any resistance in the flywheel. We (wife and I) rolled the car back and foward on the driveway and could shift into 1st gear without any problems. I imagined rolling the car would turn the gears inside.
I'm ordering the clutch parts tonight, in the meantime, can I assume the clutch system was indeed the problem(for the peace of mind). Is there any other tests I can do at this point to test the tranny?
Thanks for all your time,
Boris
oh, and that that plastic housing over the clutch sucks big time getting off.
