the pedal is fine and it started recently, I'd bet on the dry splines preventing the disk from floating away from the flywheel and pressure plate properly. Doesn't take much input power to overwhelm the synchronizers, especially standing still. Do you get a grind with quick shifts into reverse w/o engaging a synchronized gear first? I'll bet you would but I'd also venture you've been around Saabs long enough to know better than to have even tried on this car. Replace the pilot bearing no matter how nice it feels. Is the disk even really worn or are you just on a fishing trip looking for this problem? BTW, tip on the plastic cover-handle it like you hate it. It won't break and pussyfooting around with it only makes it more difficult. It's a breeze once you lose respect for it.
