Hi Kevin,
That's not such a bad idea for initial testing. Just put a good unit in line with a bad one and profile the difference. If I go the whole route, I'd build a proper manometer based flow bench using either a differential pressure sensor or a Pitot tube for flow measurement and then using barometric pressure and temperature calculate density altitude. That's what's needed for the MAP type FI systems. The MAS type FI systems are so much simpler.
When I did the Honda system a few years ago I used, as a guide, a paper written by Al Grippo that outlined the math for doing accurate FI. If I could figure out how to easily identify Cylinder #1 on the SAAB I'd try putting the Honda controller on the SAAB.
As always, I will report results. Right now I'm still waiting for a waybill number for the AMM I ordered so I can track the package.
