When in college, used cheapest brand name 87octane I could find (hey, pizza budget and all...) in my '85 900S from ~120-160k miles. Engine perf steadily declined.
Despite thorough tuneups/tweaking, it bounced back w a vengeance only after aggressive injector cleaning. Had I known it would make such a diff, would've had it professionally done and been done with it (prob cheaper overall, definitely faster!). Instead my Amsoil-obsessed dad foisted gallon after gallon (expensive!) of Amsoil PI inj/fuel sys cleaner on me. It took a long time/lots of PI, but the car runs amazingly well (smoooooth, nice pull) at 205k mi.
Now I use only 93 octane Mobile/Chevron/Amoco-BP not for the octane (don't really need it in my case), but because they have additional detergent in the gas and are marginally better refined (supposedly). I continue to use 2oz squirt of PI in every tank.
Note also, ESPECIALLY if you live in an area that uses ethanol and/or reformulated gas, that it is established that these additives gunk up fuel filters more rapidly. There is no substitute for a new f. filter.
