Boris,
Probably the number one reason for a grunchy first gear is "lost motion" in the clutch actuating mechanism. Any mechanical or hydraulic "slack" that doesn't push that throwout bearing up against the diaphragm spring means the clutch doesn't release fully. A properly bled hydraulic system with no leaks will do wonders for the shifting.
Also, the clutch pedal wears out where the clevis pin for the clutch master cylinder attaches to the pedal. It makes the hole oblong so the first two inches of clutch pedal motion does nothing. Both these problems lead to premature clutch wear. Which is why many people get a much shorter life out of their second clutch.
The best shift quality occurs when ALL of the components are working as designed.
Next time you want to get that pesky input shaft seal out, use a nail to tap a small starter hole in it. Then thread a drywall or sheet metal screw into the hole in the seal. Be careful how deeply you set the screw. A couple turns will do it. Use a claw hammer or a pair of pliers to grab the screw and that seal will pop out like nothing. The technique works for most seals in the engine as well.
