Well, a lot depends on how much you idle the car. 5 minutes is a long time...I probably wouldn't replace the turbo until it got to 2-3 minutes or a long stoplight.
I just put in a rebuilt turbo on my volvo for under $500 excluding core.
Since it appears you have some time...I'd look around for a hybrid turbo maybe with ceramic ball bearings, better longevity and faster spoolup with lower output temperature. OTOH, it will cost maybe 1200 and that may be an issue with an 85 car.
Another solution is to find a good low mileage used turbo...I think it's been maybe 4 years now and over 50K for sure (I replaced it before I rebuilt the engine) that the used turbo on my 87 900T has been in there....and it's overboosted to around 17-18psi so it's been oversped a little. I paid $325 including shipping for the used turbo so <500 for a guaranteed rebuilt isn't bad. Takes about 4 hours tø install the first time on a saab. FWIW, it was easier on the Saab than the $@#$%#$% volvo.
