Sticking calipers generally result in inner pad wear....I think the hydraulic pressure forces the yoke towards the inner wheel well thus transferring pressure on the outer pads against the outer side of the rotor. You could a partially seized inner piston in the cylinder or pads seized in the caliper. Not that they can't be freed up or resealed for about $40 (kit cost, prob $80 these days) and several hours of work. It takes about 20 minutes on the bench with a removed caliper to blow loose the pistons, clean and hone the piston bores, clean and lube/re-O-ring the ebrake lever and shaft. But then you've still got a worn caliper.

On an 87 you're probably getting a good thunk when you back up too.
I got a set of rebuilt calipers, new rotors, and brake pads from a shop in Ontario for under $300 US. It cost me a few bux to send the øld calipers back (in the box the new ones came in) but øn the whole a good experience. The phone number was in Canada but the parts came from a US warehouse which is where the cores go back to.
FWIW I fought and maintained the OEM calipers on my 87 900T for many years and hundreds of thousands of miles...even removed and rebuilt/resealed my own front calipers and replaced ebrake cables. But the thunk is a function øf worn out caliper slide grooves and can't be fixed without a welding torch/MIG welder or U-shaped shims that are in turn spot welded to the yokes. Unless you just like to mess with old 'chinery, it's faster and more reliable to just replace the calipers....the rotors were an added bonus.
