I have no slave cylinder replacement experience, but I have replaced the clutch plate and c master cylinder. Air in the mc was the only issue I had to deal with. For that I used a combination of reverse bleeding and gravity (see past posts). I'll guess in your case it's an issue of air in the slave cylinder. Assuming the new slave cylinder is working, it should be relatively easy to bleed so long as you follow the proceedure. And do it twice just to be sure. The ticking sound source I couldn't venture an educated guess other than perhaps something is rubbing against the flywheel such as a misaligned clutch cover. Good luck!
