After posting I decided to try my theory out. The car had been sitting all night, so the conditions were optimum. After removing the aux air valve and putting a small 8mm wrench to the adjusting nut, I noticed the nut was loosened, and most importantly that the valve was at it's minimal setting, meaning it was opened for it's shortest duration. Visibly there's not that much difference between the minimum and max setting for that adjustment nut (maybe 1/8 inch at most), but it's appearantly enough for the engine to function properly through the warm-up phase. I adjusted the valve for the maximum setting to hopefully notice any difference between minimum and maximum settings after starting the car. To my amazed delight, the warm-up went flawless. A higher idle speed than what I've become accustomed to, but a nice smooth transition from cold to warm engine operation. Reminds me of all the Ford and GM cars and trucks I've known growing up during the cold east coast winters. They'd all idle high for some 5 minutes until sufficiently warmed up. I should have given more credit to the SAAB folks who live in the coldest climates to design an engine with really cold starts in mind. Adjust that little 8mm nut indeed!
