Best way to educate myself

Hi, I own an '89 900. It was always well maintained and has
130K. I have had it for almost 4 years and love it. Unfortunately, a car this age can be troublesome to maintain when you are completely ignorant about cars, as I am. I have learned a little here and there, but often at the expense of paying an arm and a leg on repairs. (I have a sign on my forehead that says "rip me off, I know nothing about cars"). Since I love my car, and want to keep it a while without it becoming a money pit, how can a novice such as me best educate themselves on the basics. I'm not saying that I want to start working on it - my goal is to become familiar with basic troubleshooting and preventative maintenance (ie. spotting a hose that needs replacing). Is picking up a Chilton manual the best thing for someone like me to do?...Thanks for your help guys.......
