I wouldn't mix winter tires with all-seasons- Posted by IrieTom [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: tires, tucker, Wed, 11 Dec 2002 11:08:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This can lead to dangerous instability. Most people assume that since the car is front wheel drive, then it should be ok to put snows on the front wheels for winter driving. That setup might work fine for accelerating in a straight line, but will not work very well when turning, slowing down, or even going downhill.
If the drive wheels have better traction than the rear wheels and the rear wheels lose traction, the car can spin.
On the other hand, if the drive wheels have less traction than the rear wheels and the front wheels lose traction, the car will lose the ability to steer.
I prefer a set of 4 winter tires, rotated regularly so that they wear evenly. Hopefully the extra money spent will keep my car from spinning or sliding off the road or into other vehicles.
