Aftermkt Radio Install questions (any budget recos?)

I will soon be replacing my OEM cassette/radio.
I know i will need some sort of adapter that most people recommend buying from Crutchfield. I remember reading in the past that the adapter is not on their website, but you need to call them on the phone to order. However, i just did a search on their site for "Saab" and found 2 wire harnesses for sale at $9/each (although each involves some splicing of wires).
Is this the adapter i will need and has been recommended in the past, or is there something else available out there (i thought the adapter was more like $35 or so)? I thought there might be an adpater to go from Saab-to-Pioneer(or whatever brand u choose) that doesn't involve any splicing (like one that would accept the Saab configuration on one side and accept the Head Unit's Manufacturer on the other end). Also, if i go with the $9 adapter on Crutchfiled site, is a crimping tool necessary if i don't plan on soldering?
I'm considering buying a Pioneer DEH-1400 (~$120) as i'm looking for a budget system that will allow me to play CDs and CD-Rs without skipping. Not a major concern, but one to consider, is something that won't jump out at you when looking at the dash of my '86 900S (which removes about 75% of the head units out there, with their bright silver faces and green LCDs).
Any comments on this unit or something similar that anyone recommends are requested.
