"I remember reading in the past that the adapter is not on their website, but you need to call them on the phone to order."
That's correct you can call them and order it!
"$9 each"
That's about what I paid for mine when I got it from them, not sure about that $35 price you figured.
"I thought there might be an adpater to go from Saab-to-Pioneer(or whatever brand u choose) that doesn't involve any splicing (like one that would accept the Saab configuration on one side and accept the Head Unit's Manufacturer on the other end."
That's exactly how they work, you judged correctly again...... You simply wire the harness to the aftermarket head unit, then plug it into the harness that's in the dashboard. The head unit will have instructions that say what each of it wires are, they're color coded as well. The wiring harness will also say what each of it's wires are. Sometimes the two will even have the same colors as I found when I wired my Alpine up a few months back. Match them up and you're good to go my friend. Then just plug it in and go...
"Also, if i go with the $9 adapter on Crutchfiled site, is a crimping tool necessary if i don't plan on soldering?"
Why bother???? What I usually do with mine is simply braid the ends together really tight, as if it was hiar or whatever, then wrap with electrical tape. Also wrap any unused wires with tape as well. I've been doing it this way for over TEN years now and I've have ZERO problems from it.
So, the head unit will have raw wires at the end of it's harness, the wiring harnes will have raw wires on one end and the adapter plug on the other. You'll be simply joining these two together using the supplied instruction that will come with both the stereo and the harness. when you've completed that, your new stereo will be simply plug and play..
See Ya,
Phil
