Matthew,
I haven't ever used one of those portable chargers, but it sounds like it's a sort of auxilliary battery boost (my terminology) type of thing.
It might not have enough "juice" by itself to turn your engine over. What leads me to believe that is the slow 'one "cycle" or rollover every second' you describe. The car's battery appears to be completely dead, having had some parasitic current draw probably during that whole 2 week period you were gone, maybe an interior or trunk light, perhaps?
My three ideas:
1) Try jump-starting your 900 with someone else's car using jumper cables, but be forewarned of possible voltage spikes which could damage your fuel injection "brain" (LH-Jetronic computer).
2) Hook up a regular battery charger to your battery (probably should disconnect battery ground first, though, to protect LH-Jetronic computer).
3) Alternatively, if you don't have a charger or have access to borrow one, try a new battery. It's probably the least dangerous bet for your sensitive LH computer. If THAT doesn't work, then I'd suspect the starter or starter wiring.
Hope this helps!
