sounds like it had a duff head gasket.. and if u did disable your fan running after shut down your engine wouldnt seize.. not all cars have electric fans u know.. in fact none of em used to have.. u are probably correct about some residual heat in the cylinders tranfering into the coolent after shut down.. this might just.. if your car was right on the edge of blowing its coolent thru the pressure cap cause it to blow.. with a saab at 15psi your gauge would have to be well into the red before this was possible thow.. as for preventing possible engine seizure.. well not even vaguely possible or relevant..

the reason some cars do it is because of the high fan current drain they dont bother powering the fan thru the ignition circuit so switching the ignition off dosnt affect the fan at all.. it keeps going till the heat sensor shuts it down..

the downside of this fan going is extra noise.. the fans life will be shorter and with lots of short city stop (engine on and off) type driving u could well end up with a flat battery..

my rover/honda dosnt do it.. in fact none of the cars i have owned over the last few years have done it except for a chrysler avenger i had years ago.. of course way back then the opinon was it did it cos the manufacturers couldnt be bother to do the job properly and fit a relay and run it thru the ignition circuit.. ie.. it was a cheap option..

its a saab quirk.. he he he.. still it dont do that much harm even if it dont do that much good either..
