I am reassembling my 5 speed for my 90T. One of the later items to go in is the input shaft, which uses a pair of tapered roller bearings to mount the input shaft. When you read the procedure within the trans. rebuild manual, the process of replacing these bearings looks quite painstaking and appears to require several iterations, shim adjustments, and a 3 ton press to maintain load during axial play checks. etc.

Given the complexity of this, I am contemplating leaving the original as-is and reinstalling it. Is this adviseable? I understand this shaft takes a lot of loading in delivering the power from engine to trans. but the procedure to replace these bearings looks involved & I am a bit afraid to open a can of worms....

Anyone ever had these bearings fail? Please advise.

FWIW trans has 130K miles on the clock.
