As commented on, flushing is not mandatory. However, based on over 25 years of using and selling AMSOIL, I strongly recommend using a good flush, such as made by AMSOIL or BG, before changing over. Complaints about excessive oil consumption after change to AMSOIL in higher mileage cars dropped about 80% after AMSOIL came out with their flush.
If you don't, or won't, flush, a good synthetic will do the same type cleaning--just more slowly. In that case, plan to change the filter after a couple of thousand miles, and maybe dropping the first load after 4-5,000 miles.
Having said that, my last Saab, an 88 9000Turbo with 87,000 miles was changed to AMSOIL 10W-30 before I picked it up. I wasn't about to drop the new oil to flush, so ran it about 10,000 miles and all was fine. As I recall, I did change the oil filter after 6 months or so.
