So my car (89 900S) was having a very hard time starting of late, and Friday, it was rainy and the car just turned over and turned over, but simply *would not* start. So, my father and I thought "distributor cap." So we ordered a distributor cap, distributor rotor, and ignition wires. On Saturday, it was no longer rainy and I tried to start the car again. Finally, after much turning and gas pumping, the car started and after a little warm up, was running perfectly. I drove it around for 5 minutes and everything seemed perfectly normal, plenty of power (for the 2.0L N/A anyway...) and so I came back, turned it off, and started her up again. This time, the car ran rough, barely held idle at around 400 uneven RPMs. I drove it around again and it was fine at higher RPMs, > 3000, but at lower RPMs it would be jerky and misfire.

Today the new parts came and after installing them, the car still runs rough. Now, though, it starts very easily. It just often won't even hold the 400 RPMs... it just will die 60% of the time. It gets a little more complicated now...

1. The engine won't give full power until 3000ish RPMs... it feels like it's hesitating.
2. The engine generally runs rough at low RPMs, but is relatively smooth feeling at higher RPMs.
3. An interesting artifact: sometimes the "Shift Up" light blinks at me (seemingly randomly) even when I'm in 5th gear; this has never happened to me before today.

This is perplexing because it happened so abruptly!

I filled the tank and put some drygas in, but my hunch is that this is not the problem.

Any ideas?

TIA,

Tim B.
