First time trans. swap beginning this weekend Posted by Saana88 [Email] (#207) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Saana88) on Mon, 23 Dec 2002 14:14:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hiya everyone.
The time has come and the resources need to be pooled. I am asking for any and all advice on the automatic to manual conversion which I will be attempting this weekend or any time after the 26th. I have found a complete, running, tail-ended donor car which was sex-changed a little over a year ago, and my auto has decided to not move into gear when it is very cold. I have access to a Bentley manual, Mr. Jeter's narrative guide, and a good assortment of tools. The location is a two-car garage in upstate NY, while not heated it will be out of the wind. The receptor car is an '88 8 valve 900 with 156,000 miles. The car has been in the family for four years now and was meticulously maintained, has very little rust, and has not been abused. The donor car is an '87 S with unknown mileage. A test drive yesterday showed that fifth gear was difficult to engage but would work (motor mounts?) and the transmission would not pop out of gear or make pinion bearing noise, no matter how hard I tried. As part of the donor car deal, an engine hoist with load balancer will be included. I generally have a good deal of patience while working on cars and am willing to devote a week to the operation. I also do not have much to lose. I have replaced ball joints, exhaust systems, brake calipers, heat shields, and other easier tasks on a 900 in the past, but have not broken apart axles/CV or removed a motor before.
I would appreciate any advice those of you with experience could lend me beforehand. In my opinion, this situation is precisely what Saabnet is for. I am looking to get the job done right at the expense of time, so I would appreciate any shifter alignment hints you could render. I have always wanted to do the operation on this car and now is my chance.
TIA
Jeff (Saana88, formerly 90900)
