coolant, CV, transmission oil
Today I tried to figure out where the coolant on my '88 S is leaking from. I ran the car until the system heated up and watched the engine. I noticed coolant dripping down from the engine onto the ground but I still don't know where the hole is. Several of the coolant hoses had signifigant wear - most notably those running to and from the heater core. I plan to replace both in the near future. I saw something dripping underneath the AC compressor and wished to look under it.
How do you remove the AC compressor? Bently is rather terse on this subject. Is it necessary to remove the intake manifold to remove the compressor?
I also looked at the torn CV boot on the driver's side. I assume that the joint on that side is original. (PO said passenger side was replaced, car currently has 100K) Though I now have a replacement boot and the special tool for crimping the metal cuffs which hold it on I did not do the repair today.
Bently suggests a special SAAB tool which keeps the springs compressed when the Ball joints are removed. Is this tool necessary? I was scared to start removing the steering member and then find that the relaxed spring impossible to manage.
Also added 1 quart of oil to the manual transmission. I bought a quart of Havoline 10W30 at the local autoparts store. I noticed that the "SF" specification was nowhere to be found on the quart of Havoline. Did I add the wrong type of oil or has the old specification been superceded? Should I be concerned about topping off the transmission with an oil which claims "detergent" properties on the back label?
