I think many folks don't bother to look to critically at everything after setting everything to TDC before ripping into the job. What you see drove me nuts the first few times. The flywheel is the absolute-when it is at TDC, one can note that the cams are generally off a tad when you start due to wear. This will be increased by milling the head. Less panic is induced, though, when one has a feel for exactly how things were prior. No need to drive the car to see if you have it right. Just install the tensioner and rotate the engene 2 revs in the normal direction and recheck. Even one tooth error is grossly obvious, so much so that you'll laugh at the amount you are worrying about now.
